How much does a loyalty program cost? Costs and return explained
The real costs of a loyalty program (software, rewards, staff time) and a simple way to estimate its return for a café, restaurant or shop.
In this article6
The three costs
Software: a digital card platform, from about $9.99 a month for one location. Rewards: the cost of what you give away, measured at your cost, not your menu price. Time: a scan at checkout takes seconds, but train the team so it happens every time.
A simple return estimate
Take your average ticket and your margin. If a coffee sells for $3 with a $2 margin, and the program brings back 30 members for one extra visit a month, that's $60 of extra margin. If the software costs $9.99 and the free coffees cost about $10 at cost, the program leaves about $40 a month and grows with each new member.
Use your own numbers, start conservative and compare after two or three months.
Costs people forget
Printing paper cards, lost cards, stamps given twice and rewards redeemed with fake stamps. A digital card removes most of these, which is part of its return.
When it doesn't pay off
If the reward is too generous for your margin, if the goal is so far that nobody reaches it, or if the team forgets to offer it. Fix the reward and the habit before blaming the program.
Practical checklist
- Write down your average ticket and margin
- Price the reward at your cost
- Estimate extra visits conservatively
- Review results after 60 to 90 days
