1. Offer a reward customers can reach

The most common mistake is a goal that feels too far away. If a regular visits twice a week, a reward at 8 to 10 visits is reachable in about a month. A free coffee, dessert or service is easier to understand than a percentage.

Write the reward in one line: “Buy 9, the 10th is free.” If you need a paragraph to explain it, simplify it.

2. Make joining take one minute

Ask for the minimum: name and phone or email. A QR poster at the counter lets customers sign up while they wait, without downloading an app. The faster the sign-up, the more people join.

Train your team to mention it once per order: “Do you want to start earning stamps?” That question does more than any sign.

3. Start with a welcome gift

Giving one or two stamps on sign-up makes the first goal feel closer and rewards customers who switch from a paper card. It costs little and increases the chance of a second visit.

4. Celebrate birthdays

A birthday reward is personal and easy to automate. Ask for the date at sign-up (optional) and send a drink, dessert or discount that week. Customers remember the business that remembered them.

5. Invite back customers who stop coming

Look for customers who haven't visited in 30 or 60 days and send them a short notice with a reason to return, such as double points this week. Send it only to customers who agreed to receive messages.

6. Reward your best customers more

Tiers such as Silver and Gold give your most frequent customers something to protect. Keep it simple: two or three levels with one clear extra benefit each.

7. Measure who comes back

Sign-ups are only the start. Track return visits, redemptions and lapsed customers each month. If people join but rarely return, the reward is too far away or not attractive enough.

Practical checklist

  • Choose one reward reachable in about a month
  • Put a QR sign-up poster at the counter
  • Add a welcome gift
  • Ask for birthdays (optional)
  • Review returning and lapsed customers monthly
